Types of UGC videos, and when each one works
Not all UGC does the same job. Picking the right format for the buyer’s question is usually worth more than finding a “better” creator.
Start from the buyer's question
Every UGC format answers a different question in the buyer's head. Does it work? How do I use it? Is it worth the price? Is it better than what I have? Choose the format by the question, then the creator.
The core formats
1. Testimonial-style review
A creator talks to camera about their experience. Best for building trust and handling "does it actually work?". Weak if it sounds scripted. Keep claims to what you can substantiate.
2. Demo or tutorial
The product in use, start to finish. Best for products where how matters: skincare routines, gadgets, apps, kitchen products. Often the most reliable format for paid social.
3. Unboxing
First impressions, packaging and what's in the box. Strong for gifting, premium products and subscription boxes.
4. Problem–solution
A relatable frustration first, then the product as the fix. The opening problem does most of the work, so test several.
5. Comparison
Your product against the usual alternative, or "what I used before". Powerful, but comparative claims need care and fairness in most markets.
6. Objection buster
One video per objection: price, sizing, taste, delivery time, returns, cash on delivery. Excellent for lower-funnel retargeting.
7. Before-and-after or transformation
Highly persuasive and highly regulated. Only where genuine, consented, not misleading and allowed for the category. Health, beauty and therapeutic products have extra rules.
8. Founder or team-style UGC
Not strictly "user" content, but filmed in the same native style. Useful for brand story, behind-the-scenes and trust.
9. Reaction or trend adaptation
Creators reacting to the product or adapting a trend. Good for reach and organic social; less predictable as paid creative.
How to mix them
For a first batch, cover three or four distinct formats, not ten versions of one. A typical starting mix is a demo, a testimonial-style video, a problem–solution video and an objection buster. Then double down on what your ad data says works.
Make every format testable
Whatever the format, give each video several opening hooks, keep the product visible early, and agree usage rights before filming. Our guide to UGC hooks covers openings in detail, and how to brief UGC creators covers the brief.
