What are content pillars?
Content pillars are the few themes a brand returns to again and again. They’re what turn a posting schedule into something people recognise and come back for.
The idea
A content pillar is a recurring theme that serves both your audience and your business. Three or four pillars are usually enough. Each pillar is then expressed through repeatable formats: a series, a structure or a style people learn to expect.
How to choose your pillars
Start from where three things overlap:
- What your audience genuinely wants: their questions, problems and interests.
- What you can credibly talk about: your expertise, product, people and story.
- What moves the business: the beliefs or actions that lead to sales or enquiries.
A clinic might choose: patient education, behind the scenes, doctor perspectives, patient journeys (with consent). A D2C food brand might choose: recipes, ingredient sourcing, founder story, customer moments.
Pillars need formats
A pillar without a format becomes random posts on a topic. Give each pillar one or two formats, for example:
- Education → a weekly 30-second explainer series.
- Behind the scenes → a "how it's made" Reel.
- Proof → customer stories or UGC.
- Point of view → founder-to-camera opinions.
How pillars help
- Consistency without running out of ideas.
- Recognition: people learn what you stand for.
- Production efficiency: formats can be batched and scripted.
- Better measurement: you can compare pillars and formats, not just individual posts.
Common mistakes
- Too many pillars, so nothing builds.
- Pillars that only serve the brand ("our products", "our offers").
- No formats, so every post is reinvented.
- Never reviewing which pillars actually perform.
We build pillars and formats into every social media marketing retainer. See also short-form video strategy.
Quick checklist
- Can you name your three or four pillars in one sentence each?
- Does every pillar serve a real audience need, not just your product?
- Does each pillar have at least one repeatable format?
- Can a month of content be planned from the pillars without inventing new themes?
- Do you review performance by pillar and format each month?
- Have you retired a pillar that consistently underperforms?
If you answer "no" to two or more, the pillars probably need revisiting before you produce more content.
