Short-form video strategy for brands

Reels and Shorts are where most discovery happens now. A strategy, not a stream of trends, is what turns views into recognition and demand.

Start with the job of each video

Short-form video can attract (new people discover you), convince (people understand why you're different) or convert (people take the next step). Most brands only make "attract" content, then wonder why views don't become customers. Plan a mix.

Formats that repeat

Pick a handful of formats tied to your content pillars:

  • Explainers: one question, one answer, under a minute.
  • Behind the scenes: how it's made, who makes it.
  • Founder or expert to camera: opinions and advice.
  • Demos and tutorials: the product in use.
  • Customer or creator stories: with consent, or as UGC.
  • Series: episodic content people follow.

Hooks and retention

The first one or two seconds decide reach. Open on the problem, the payoff or a visual moment, not a logo or greeting. Edit tightly, add captions (many people watch muted) and keep text inside safe zones. See UGC hooks; the same principles apply.

A sustainable production rhythm

  • Batch planning: a month of scripts at a time.
  • Batch recording: one session produces many videos.
  • Template edits: consistent structure, faster editing.
  • A review loop: monthly, decide which formats to repeat or drop.

Measure more than views

Views show reach. Also watch average watch time and retention, saves and shares (signals of value), profile visits and follows, and actions (clicks, enquiries, sales). Compare formats over a month, not posts over a day.

Trends, used carefully

Trends can help reach, but only when you can adapt them to your pillars and audience. A trend that doesn't fit your brand rarely builds anything lasting.

We build short-form video into our social media marketing and content marketing work.

A monthly planning checklist

  • Which formats will we repeat this month, and why?
  • Which pillar does each video serve?
  • What's the hook for each, and do we have alternatives?
  • When is the batch recording session, and who's on camera?
  • Which videos get a paid boost if they perform organically?
  • Which metrics decide what we repeat next month?
