Creative fatigue: why ads stop working
Most ads have a shelf life. Spotting fatigue early, and having new creative ready, is one of the biggest differences between accounts that scale and accounts that stall.
What creative fatigue is
Creative fatigue happens when the people most likely to respond to an ad have already seen it, often several times. Engagement drops, the platform has to reach less-interested people, and costs rise.
The signs
- Rising frequency in your core audience.
- Falling hook rate and CTR on a previously strong ad.
- Rising CPM and cost per result without an obvious external cause.
- Comments turning negative or repetitive ("I keep seeing this").
One bad day isn't fatigue. Look for a sustained trend over a week or more.
What makes it worse
- Too few concepts. Accounts relying on one or two hero ads fatigue fastest.
- Small audiences. Smaller markets (for example Australia, the UK or a single city) see frequency climb sooner.
- High spend relative to audience size.
- Variations that aren't really different. New colours on the same concept don't reset attention.
How to fix it
Refresh the concept, not just the design. A new angle, a new person, a new format or a new hook.
Iterate on winners. Keep the body of a winning ad and test new hooks; keep the hook and test new bodies.
Rotate formats. Alternate UGC, founder-led video, demos and statics so the same audience sees genuinely different ads.
Plan supply ahead. Have the next batch ready before the current winners decline. A weekly or fortnightly creative rhythm prevents emergencies.
Watch the trend, not the day. Set thresholds for when an ad gets refreshed or paused.
Where UGC helps
UGC is one of the most efficient ways to keep concept variety high. See UGC ads for Meta and creative testing for Meta Ads.
We plan creative refreshes as part of every performance marketing engagement.
A simple refresh routine
- Each week, list your top five ads by spend.
- For each, check frequency, hook rate and CPA against the previous two weeks.
- Flag any ad where hook rate has dropped and CPA has risen for a sustained period.
- Brief a replacement concept for each flagged ad: a new angle or person, not a recolour.
- Launch replacements in your testing campaign before switching off the fatigued ad.
- Record what replaced what, so you learn which concepts last longest in your account.
