How retargeting works, and when it wastes money
Retargeting shows ads to people who already know you. Used well, it closes sales; overused, it mostly takes credit for sales you’d have made anyway.
The basic idea
Retargeting (or remarketing) shows ads to people who have already interacted with you: visited your site, watched a video, engaged on Instagram, added to cart or started a form. Platforms build these audiences from your pixel, server-side events, engagement data and, with consent, customer lists.
Audiences worth retargeting
- Cart or form abandoners: highest intent, smallest audience.
- Product or service page viewers: interested, not yet committed.
- Video viewers and engagers: warm but early.
- Past customers: for repeat purchase, upgrades or referrals.
Creative for each stage
- Abandoners: objection busters (delivery, returns, price, payment options), reminders and reassurance.
- Viewers: proof: testimonial-style UGC, demos, comparisons.
- Engagers: the next step of the story, not the same ad again.
- Customers: complementary products, refills and loyalty offers.
When retargeting wastes money
- It takes credit for inevitable sales. People who were going to buy anyway click a retargeting ad, and the platform claims the sale.
- Budgets are out of proportion. If most spend goes to retargeting, you're fishing in a shrinking pond. Prospecting has to keep filling it.
- Frequency is too high. Seeing the same ad many times annoys people.
- Privacy limits shrink audiences. Cookie consent and device privacy mean retargeting pools are smaller and less precise than they used to be.
A sensible approach
Keep retargeting a modest share of spend, use different creative from prospecting, cap frequency, and judge success with blended metrics such as MER and new-customer CAC rather than retargeting ROAS alone. See what ROAS can't tell you.
Retargeting is planned as part of every performance marketing engagement.
A quick audit of your retargeting
- What share of total spend goes to retargeting?
- How large is each retargeting audience, and how often is it refreshed by prospecting?
- What frequency are people seeing?
- Is retargeting creative different from prospecting creative?
- If you paused retargeting for a week in one region, would sales actually drop?
