What is digital lead generation?

Digital lead generation turns online attention into enquiries your team can follow up. It’s a system, not a single ad, and its success is measured by the sales it leads to.

The definition

Digital lead generation uses online channels, usually paid ads on Meta and Google plus landing pages or lead forms, to attract people who are interested in what you offer and capture their details so your team can follow up.

How it differs from outbound

Outbound lead generation means you contact people: cold calling, cold email, LinkedIn outreach, appointment-setting teams. Digital (inbound) lead generation means people come to you by responding to your campaigns. They're different services, often provided by different specialists. Many "lead generation agencies" focus on outbound B2B work.

The parts of the system

  1. Targeting: who the campaigns reach (by interest, search intent or location).
  2. Offer and creative: why someone should enquire now.
  3. Capture: a lead form, landing page, WhatsApp or call option.
  4. Qualification: questions that separate serious buyers from browsers.
  5. Tracking: knowing which campaign produced which lead.
  6. Routing: getting the lead to the right person within minutes.
  7. Follow-up: your team calling or messaging, which is usually the step that decides results.
  8. Feedback: sharing which leads became customers, so campaigns can optimise for quality.

Judging lead quality

Cost per lead is easy to measure and easy to game. Better measures:

  • Cost per qualified lead (met your criteria).
  • Contact rate (how many you actually reached).
  • Conversion to appointment, visit or sale.
  • Revenue per lead over time.

Common failure points

  • Forms that ask nothing, so anyone fills them.
  • Leads sitting in an inbox for hours.
  • No feedback loop, so platforms keep finding cheap, low-intent leads.
  • Measuring the agency on volume rather than quality.

Questions to ask before you start

  • What makes a lead qualified for us?
  • How quickly can our team respond, and who does it?
  • What happens to leads we can't reach on the first try?
  • Can we share outcomes back to the ad platforms?
  • What will we measure: cost per lead, per qualified lead or per sale?
